When the camera is pointed your direction do the elusive Ricky Bobby Hands come out? Having been a family photographer in Houston Texas for over a decade the most common thing clients say to me is “I’m not photogenic”. I can guarantee that is why this reel on what to do with your hands, went viral. Therefore, today, I will be sharing my favorite tips for taming those hands and looking your best in family portraits.

What to do with your hands during your photoshoot:
1. Play with your ring.
This is the easiest prompt to give anyone from seniors to dads during a photoshoot. You can see this prompt below in a few of the images but it’s simple and anyone can do it. This prompt works when standing or even when sitting. An alteration below is having the teen but his hands on his knees and then casually play with his imaginary ring.
2. Pockets For the win.
Front pockets, back pockets it doesn’t matter! I prompt the client put their thumbs in their pockets rather than their hands because it’s a much more comfortable and casual pose. Bonus tip: I also like to make sure there is a slight bend at the elbow otherwise you end up looking a little like a nutcracker or toy solider. My famous line at all session is “if you don’t know what to do with your hands put them on somebody or in your pockets”.
3. Pretzel Hand hold.
If you watched any of those videos linked about then you saw this one multiple times. Pretzel hand hold is simply holding hands with the person next to you. Any easy adaptation of this is for person to sandwich the other family members hand in between their two hands. You can also do this but turning sideways and “pretzeling” your arm under the other family member and entertaining your fingers.
4. No white Knuckles.
The most important thing is to make sure that everyone’s hands are loose. Tight grips and white knuckles are an automatic “no”. If I see someone with a tight curled hand or fist I typically ask them to put them in their pockets because this is a true sign of them feeling uncomfortable.
I want your family pictures to be as fun and comfortable as possible which is why I every session with me is a series of games and prompts. The goal is to make sure that you feel confident and can relax and just simply love on your family but everybody needs a little instruction. Let’s face it, we aren’t supermodels over here so prompts and games give you things to do so you are less worried about my camera on you.
