Using a neutral color palette for fall family photos in Houston creates a classic aesthetic. Plus it is my favorite choice for this upcoming 2024 fall season. This photoshoot from earlier this year is the perfect example of using a neutral palette brilliantly. I was speaking at a family photography event for the Iowa PPA Chapter. While there I met and photographed the cutest real every day family. But just like all family’s, the big question of ‘what to wear’ was the first thing I needed to answer.
Neutral Tones
While styling this family I knew the Iowa landscape was going to be pretty brown – (just like Texas in the late fall). The neutral color palette was perfect for the varying skin tones of the family of four. Creams, whites, taupe and dusty blue are neutral color combo that seamlessly transitions from fall to spring and easily compliment any location.
Mixing Patterns
My favorite clothing choice for this family session was that we mixed patterns in such a beautiful way. While mixing patterns can be tricky these fall photos show the perfect way to do it. Start with a striped pattern like the one the oldest sister, then add a small floral prints with corresponding colors. Next add in a solid outfit such as dads outfit selection here. Finally add either another solid, large floral print or scattered print which is mom’s dress in this family session.
Don’t forget texture
Adding texture to this family of four’s what to wear clothing board was the key! The golden chinky sweater for big sister was an amazing find at Kohls in the Lauren Conrad Little Co collection. While the embroidery texture on moms dress from Free People added depth all on its own. We easily carried dad’s taupe t shirt shade down in the cognac sandals from Target and simply added a light cream sweater over little sisters dress.
