Whether I am capturing high school seniors or a family with young babies the #1 questions is always the same…. “What do I wear for my photography session?” I think I have stated 2,025 times that what you wear in your photos is the key to taking a good picture to and AMAZING picture! In fact, this is the biggest reason why complimentary styling is offered to every client no matter what type of photography session you book. When you book your senior portraits with Chubby Cheek Photography we not only provide you with a digital what to wear guide filled with tips but I also work with you to select outfits from you own closet or in stores! Need a clothing guide? Don’t worry I got you girl!
However, in today’s post, we are going to address a few wardrobe tips to AVOID for your upcoming senior photoshoot.
4 Wardrobe Mistakes to Avoid for Your Senior Session
1. Forgetting the accessories
Accessories can add so much personality to each outfit you select. From sunglasses, hats, scarves and bracelets to earrings or a necklace that have special meaning in your family. Wearing bracelet stacks can add pops of colors and bold necklaces can make a statement. BONUS TIP: I encourage my senior clients to have their outfits laid out 4-7 days in advance. I ask them to put any and all accessories they will need for each outfit in a ziplock bag and poke a hole in that bag and stick it over the hanger. This allows us to easily and quickly switch outfits and ensures that we never forget jewelry.
2. Bland & Boring Kicks
Have you ever noticed that you can tell alot about a person by looking at their shoes? Well shoe lovers, this is your time to shine! Shoes are often an overlooked wardrobe item because most people don’t think about them until the last minute but in reality shoes can make or break a session. Shoe variety is a real thing, yall! I remind my senior portrait clients to try to have at least 3 different shoe types incorporated in their sessions. Capturing Texas High school seniors almost always means a pair of boots are walking into the senior session. However heels, tennis shoes and a cute pair of sandals are easy additions to your packing list.
3. Wearing the wrong undergarments
The camera sees and shows everything! Wearing the wrong undergarments can definitely be the reason an image stays on the cutting room floor. Be sure to wear neutral or skin colored undergarments. Trust me, white jeans aren’t as thick as you think. While I bring a case of “emergency fix” items like bobby pins, safety pins etc it is best for you to bring the “underneath” items to ensure they fit properly. Word of advice, go out right now and get yourself skin colored strapless, sticky and ‘no see’ undergarments.
4. Low cut or too tight outfit selections
Remember grandma and grandpa are going to want to frame a print of some of your high school senior pics, so this is not the time to make a risqué style choice. Plus, if you’re rushing a sorority once you get to college you will definitely need a solid headshot for your rush packet, so too tight, too short or low cut selections are not the best choice. Yes I want your personality to shine but don’t forget I guide you with movement based posing prompts which means LOTS OF MOVEMENT and being able to sit squat or skip in your outfits is a must.
