Houston Wildflowers by Month: The Best Flowers for Senior Pictures in Houston, Texas

Dreaming of senior pictures surrounded by wildflowers? 

If you’re planning your Houston senior photography session and wondering what flowers will be blooming during your senior photos, you’ve come to the right place!

What month to book your senior photos in Houston Texas. My own daughters just celebrated back-to-back senior years, and I took allll of the notes! So, if there is anyone qualified to give you the most epic + real time tips to make your senior year easy and amazing it’s me, the mom who happens to also be a senior photographer. Not to mention I have been photographing families and seniors here in the Houston area for two decades!

As a Houston senior photographer, I absolutely LOVE incorporating wildflowers, tall grasses, and colorful Texas blooms into senior sessions. They add movement, color, texture, and that effortless, dreamy feeling we all want in a gorgeous senior gallery.

But there’s one little thing you should know about photographing wildflowers in Houston:

Mother Nature is in charge. And newsflash she doesn’t listen to my suggestions.

Bloom times can change from year to year depending on rainfall, temperatures, freezes, and other weather conditions. Texas Parks & Wildlife notes that wildflower displays can vary significantly by region and season, so the dates below are best thought of as a general guide rather than a guaranteed bloom calendar

That said, here’s my Houston, Tomball, The Woodlands and Magnolia wildflower guide for senior pictures, month by month!

January – February: A Quiet Start to Wildflower Season

Okay, let’s be real January obviously isn’t typically the month I’d choose if your number-one priority is a huge field of colorful wildflowers.

Instead, January senior sessions are all about beautiful natural textures or my favorite January Senior Location is a downtown urban setting. Take a peek at Jon Cooper School’s Lexi and her urban senior session.

January and February senior sessions can have:

• Tall grasses
• Winter textures
• Soft golden light
• Nature trails

But as you can see from Lexi’s senior session in downtown you don’t need flowers to create beautiful senior pictures.

As a photographer, I’m always looking at the light, location, movement, and overall feeling of a session—not just what’s growing on the ground.

So if January or February is your month, don’t panic because Houston has what I believe is the most beautiful and photogenic downtown area. We also have the most amazing and colorful urban shopping centers that will certainly ensure that your senior images are unique and unlike anyone else in your graduating class.

Photographer’s tip: If you’re booking a February session specifically for wildflowers, I’d keep our location options flexible. Houston weather loves keeping us guessing.

March – May: Houston Spring Senior Pictures Are Here!

March is when things really start waking up.

Wildflower season is officially getting exciting, and you’ll start seeing more color throughout natural areas.

And if you’re dreaming of those iconic Texas spring wildflower senior pictures, March is definitely a month to keep on your radar as bluebonnets typically being to make their way to the woodlands, conroe and tomball areas this month.

This is also when I start getting a little too excited about my location scouting.
April is truly the dreamiest month for Texas Wildflower Senior Pictures (period).

I’m basically like:

EVERYONE GRAB YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR, I”VE GOT MY CAMERA. WE’RE GOING FLOWER HUNTING.

If you tell me you want classic Texas wildflower senior pictures, April is one of the first months I’ll have in mind.

Spring is fully underway, and depending on the year and location, bluebonnets and other colorful wildflowers may be putting on their annual show.

Texas Parks & Wildlife describes spring as a major wildflower season across Texas, with displays often building through April and into May.

Photographer’s tip: if you want May flowers you need to book my Elite collection so that you have multiple sessions in the fall to alleviate the stress of not having a calendar date or a #seniorSunday post until the end of senior year. This allows us to shoot the first half of your senior session early in the fall and then again in the spring and honestly keeps us from stressing over Texas blooms.

April – May

• Blue and purple flowers
• Fresh green grass
• Colorful fields
• Beautiful spring trees
• Gorgeous golden-hour light
• That unmistakable Texas spring feeling

This is the Pinterest-board-worthy stuff, friends.

June – August: Summer Wildflowers Start Taking Over

June in Houston means we’re officially entering summer session territory.

It’s hot.

It’s humid.

And somehow the wildflowers are still out there thriving like it’s no big deal.

Some spring blooms may be fading, but other flowers are beginning to take center stage. The flower fields start to shift from blues and purples to orange and yellow!

This is also when I become VERY serious about scheduling.

For June senior pictures, I generally love golden hour and evening sessions so we can avoid the harshest part of the Houston heat.

BYOW, Bring your own water.

July isn’t the month most people immediately think of when they imagine wildflower senior pictures, but Houston-area native plants can absolutely keep blooming through the summer.

And here’s a little secret:

You don’t need a giant field of flowers for flowers to make an impact.

Sometimes a few blooms in the foreground create beautiful depth and make a portrait feel much more editorial.

So if July is your month, we’re not giving up on the flowers! We’re just getting creative with them.

August senior sessions deserve a special award.

Because Houston.

In.

August.

But late-summer flowers can still give us gorgeous color and texture. And if we can find a little breeze? WE ARE ABSOLUTELY USING IT.

There’s nothing like a flowy senior dress moving through a field at sunset.

September – December: Golden-Hour Senior Pictures + Early Fall Wildflowers

September is one of my favorite underrated months for senior pictures.

It may not feel like fall in Houston quite yet, but the landscape can start transitioning into those beautiful late-season colors and textures.Long-blooming Texas wildflowers can continue into the fall, and Houston Audubon’s local plant gallery includes several species with bloom periods extending well beyond spring.
This means September can be a great option if you want:

Wildflowers without the classic spring look.

Think deeper colors, tall grasses and warm fall golden light.

October is one of my absolute favorite times of year for senior photography in Houston.

Why?

The weather hopefully starts behaving. The evenings get more comfortable. The light gets dreamy. Which means we can pick any location we want for your senior session and we won’t be dripping from the Texas heat. Hello give me a sleek glass shopping center or a beautiful Houston skyline please!
However for those of you wondering the Galveston coastline gives us a prolonged wildflower season into October.

Texas Coneflower and other native flowers have long bloom windows that can extend into the fall so September through November so don’t give up hope but be aware I can’t make any promises.

While spring is usually the season people associate with Texas wildflowers, several Houston-area native plants have bloom periods that extend into November. Houston Audubon’s native plant resources include Texas Coneflower, Blue Mistflower, and other late-season options. This can create a really beautiful moody, golden, natural look for senior pictures.

November is also a great month for seniors who want something a little less “spring garden” and a little more cool girl + golden field + editorial vibes.

And I’m all about thinking outside of the “flower field” box and being bold and unique with your senior photo locations.
